Polarsteps overview

The familiar core remains free. Polarsteps Plus is optional and adds features such as 3D maps, step statistics, elevation information, more map styles, route replay, more Travel Buddies and a Travel Book discount on the annual plan.

Privacy is controlled through both the account and individual trip. New accounts start private, while trips can be visible to Everyone, Followers or Only me. A separate live-location setting can hide the latest tracker position and unpublished part of the route from viewers.

Automatic tracking is useful—but not free of trade-offs

Automatic tracking is the clearest advantage of both apps. It builds a route without asking you to remember every stop. For a long road trip or multi-week journey, that can preserve details a manual journal would miss.

It also creates four practical trade-offs.

1. More location data

A manual travel map stores the places you deliberately choose. A background tracker records many waypoints between them. Even when a trip is private, this creates a more detailed location history inside the service.

That does not make tracking inherently unsafe. It means the privacy decision starts before the sharing setting: first decide whether you want the detailed route recorded at all, then decide who may see it.

2. Background permissions

Both trackers depend on location access and background activity. FindPenguins recommends unrestricted background battery use when Android stops recording reliably. Polarsteps likewise points users toward persistent location permission and disabling battery optimization when tracking becomes inaccurate.

These permissions are understandable for the feature, but they are still permissions worth reviewing after the trip.

3. Battery use

The official figures are more nuanced than “GPS drains the phone.” Polarsteps estimates about four percent battery use for a full day of normal background tracking. FindPenguins states a maximum of four percent additional daily use in its low-accuracy mode.

High accuracy changes the equation. Both services warn that it consumes more energy; FindPenguins says significantly more, while Polarsteps labels its Android high-accuracy mode as high battery use. The real result varies with the phone, signal, route, screen time and other apps.

4. Accuracy versus reliability

Power-saving settings may extend battery life but interrupt background tracking. Higher accuracy can produce a better route while increasing energy use. Airplane mode, low power mode, closed apps and operating-system decisions can all change what is recorded.

The relevant performance issue is therefore not that either app necessarily makes the phone slow. It is that automatic tracking adds a background process whose reliability and energy use depend on the operating system.

Which tracker handles privacy better?

Neither product forces every trip to be public.

FindPenguins offers four trip settings:

Individual Footprints and photos can also be private, and a protected trip can be shared by link. A configurable delay prevents followers from seeing the newest route points immediately.

Polarsteps separates account privacy from trip privacy. Accounts start private. Each trip can then be visible to Everyone, Followers or Only me. The live-location toggle hides the latest position and the section of route recorded since the last published Step; the full route becomes visible to authorized viewers after the trip ends.

FindPenguins offers finer audience selection. Polarsteps offers particularly clear controls for the latest live position. With either app, check the trip setting, link sharing and live-route behavior before departure—not after the first week of tracking.

If minimizing stored location data matters more than automatic documentation, neither automatic tracker is the ideal workflow. A map built from selected places collects less route detail by design.

Journal, planning and route tools

Choose FindPenguins when route ownership matters. GPX import and export, waypoint editing and multiple accuracy modes make it the more flexible tracker for cyclists, overlanders and travelers who want to keep or reuse route data.

Choose Polarsteps when presentation and ease matter more. Its planning, Steps, maps, stats, follower experience and visual recaps feel like parts of one coherent product. It is easier to recommend to someone who wants to start documenting a trip without thinking about route-file workflows.

Both support trips with other contributors. Polarsteps includes a smaller number of Travel Buddies in the free experience and expands that number with Plus. FindPenguins allows fellow travelers within the shared trip workflow without introducing a premium tier.

Pricing: one important difference in 2026

FindPenguins states that the complete app is free, with no premium features and no subscriptions. Printed photo books are separate physical products and cost extra.

Polarsteps also keeps its familiar planning, tracking, publishing and reliving features free. However, Polarsteps Plus now adds paid extras through monthly and annual subscriptions. The annual plan includes a discount on Travel Books.

This does not make Polarsteps unusable for free. The accurate distinction is:

Both apps can generate a printed book from the journey. Neither is unique merely because a preview exists.
