Greek Islands Highlights
A practical Greek islands hub for Cyclades, Crete, Ionian Islands, Dodecanese, Santorini, Naxos, Paros, Corfu and Rhodes - with ferry logic, routes, budget, season and island-group decisions.
Editorial introduction
Greek islands start with the right island group
The hardest decision is rarely Santorini or Naxos. It comes earlier: Cyclades, Crete, Ionian Islands or Dodecanese. Each island group has different ferry logic, seasonality, costs and travel pace. This hub helps you plan island hopping so the trip does not become ports, luggage and tight connections.
Region snapshot
Greek islands at a glance
- Best first duration
- 10-14 days for two to three islands inside one island group, with buffers before return flights or long ferries
- Short version
- 7 days with one strong island base or two very well-connected islands
- Slow version
- 14-21 days if Cyclades plus Crete or several smaller islands should fit calmly
- Core bases
- Athens, Santorini, Naxos, Paros, Milos, Crete, Corfu, Rhodes
- Main decision
- Choose one island group before famous names overload the route
- Best timing
- May-June and September for good ferry frequency, warm weather, less crowd pressure and better prices
- Cost pressure
- Ferries, domestic flights, peak-season stays, Santorini/Mykonos, transfers, rental cars and beach restaurants
- Offline issue
- Save tickets, ports, schedules, stay addresses, transfer notes and shared costs before island days

The Greek islands become calmer once the trip is no longer planned as a collection of famous names. The most important step is choosing the right island group and a pace that respects ferries, wind and pauses.
Alex-style practical take
For a first trip, I would either choose the Cyclades with two to three islands or treat Crete as its own trip. Santorini can be strong, but rarely as the only decision driver. Naxos, Paros, Milos, Corfu or Rhodes often fit real travel time better.
Where to start
Start with the island-hopping itinerary when choosing duration. Then use the ferry guide for ports and buffers, the budget guide before stays and the best-time guide before fixing sea temperature, wind and seasonal openings.

Greek islands FAQ
How many islands should you visit in one week?+
Usually one or two. Three islands in seven days often become transfer-heavy unless the connections are very direct.
Which island group is best for a first trip?+
The Cyclades are classic for island hopping. Crete is stronger as its own trip. Corfu is greener and calmer, Rhodes is more historic and often easier by flight.
Do you need a rental car?+
On Crete, Corfu and Rhodes often yes. On Santorini, Naxos or Paros it depends more on where you stay, beach plans and trip length.
When should you book ferries?+
Early for summer, popular routes and tight connections. Shoulder season gives more flexibility, but schedules and frequency can be more limited.
