Which island fits your winter holiday?

For city life and a beach without a car, I would check Las Canteras on Gran Canaria first. You can spend coastal time locally and give Vegueta its own city outing. For a week centred on beaches and promenades, consider southern Tenerife or Faro/Meloneras on Gran Canaria. Puerto de la Cruz is the Tenerife option to investigate when an established town and greener surroundings matter more than maximising dry beach hours.

Judge winter sunshine by coast and altitude

Southern Tenerife receives more sunshine over the year, while the north is wetter. Gran Canaria's tourist board likewise distinguishes its wetter northeastern areas, drier southwest and higher mountain region. For trip planning, compare actual coastal bases and assess mountain weather separately. One weather icon for an entire island is too broad to make this decision. If swimming is central to your January holiday, check whether a pool advertised by the hotel is actually heated, and whether access is included in your booking. Atlantic conditions, wind and beach flags determine whether sea swimming makes sense on the day. Promenade walks, town visits and lunch outdoors do not depend on a full beach day.

A week without a car starts at your front door

TITSA operates Tenerife's island bus network. On Gran Canaria, GLOBAL runs interurban services and Guaguas Municipales operates within Las Palmas. An address described as Costa Adeje or Maspalomas is not enough to establish that it is convenient: accommodation can sit well uphill from the coast or far from the stop you need.

Check three actual journeys first: from the arrival bus to your accommodation, from there to dinner, and back from your planned excursion. An excellent bus timetable cannot fix an awkward final walk. One base and a few deliberate travel days are enough for a first week. A mountain walk served by infrequent buses needs separate return planning.

Compare the full cost of the same trip

These two island guides use seven paid nights and eight calendar days. Arriving on day one and leaving on day eight gives you six full days. Compare flights with the luggage you need, accommodation and meals, both airport transfers, planned bus or taxi journeys and the activities you actually want.

Here is a purely illustrative calculation. A more central room costs €15 extra per night, adding €105 across seven nights. If it saves six taxi journeys you had budgeted at €20 each, transport costs fall by €120. With those assumptions, the central location costs €15 less overall.
