Tenerife gives a first-time winter visitor an extra decision before the hotel search: Puerto de la Cruz and the southern coast make different kinds of week. The north suits town walks and greener surroundings; Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje put beach and promenade time closer to the everyday plan.
Gran Canaria is simpler when the choice is city beach or southern coast. Las Canteras lets a beach, cafés and Las Palmas sit in the same day. Faro de Maspalomas or Meloneras work better when the hotel, promenade and a slower coastal routine should carry most of the week.
Compare a specific address in Puerto de la Cruz, Los Cristianos, Las Canteras and Meloneras: the airport journey, the first walk to food, and what a no-excursion day looks like. Tenerife earns the extra planning when Teide landscapes or the north are genuinely part of the trip. Gran Canaria is calmer when Las Palmas or the southern coast already gives you the week you want.

A hotel can be far from beach, Faro or the useful bus stop despite its regional label. Check the route from the actual entrance.

Choose Tenerife when the question is north or south, town or beach, and whether a volcanic highland day belongs in the week. Choose Gran Canaria when you already know you want either Las Palmas with an urban beach or a slower southern coast base. For seven nights, the better island is the one whose ordinary day needs the least transport.
This is a comparison for a first winter week, not a weather forecast. Both islands have coast, higher ground and different exposures. A sunny hotel morning says little about a mountain road, and a regional label says little about the final walk from accommodation to food or the sea.
Tenerife north: town and greener coast
Puerto de la Cruz is the Tenerife choice when you want a coastal town rather than a resort routine. The old town, gardens and a trip to La Orotava can fill a week without inventing a new excursion every morning. The trade-off is clear: the north is generally greener and more changeable than the southern coast.
Choose it when you would still enjoy the day if swimming does not happen. Check the address carefully: accommodation above the lower town can add a steep walk to dinner, the promenade and the bus. Our Tenerife north-or-south guide takes that decision further.
Tenerife south: beach and promenade first
Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje make more sense when a sandy beach, promenade and meals nearby should be the default, not an organised outing. The southern coast is the more practical choice after arriving at TFS, provided the exact accommodation is close enough to the stretch of coast you actually want to use.
Do not use the words “Costa Adeje” or “south Tenerife” as a location check. They cover different hills, hotel zones and walks. Look at the route from the property entrance to a beach, a supermarket and the bus stop you would use on arrival. Sea conditions, flags and hotel pool operation still decide whether a beach day becomes a swimming day.
Gran Canaria: city beach or southern coast
Gran Canaria offers a more direct split. Las Canteras fits city life beside a beach: you can walk the promenade, eat locally and give Vegueta or Triana a separate city day. Faro de Maspalomas or Meloneras fit a coast-first hotel week, where the lighthouse, promenade and nearby restaurants can structure ordinary days.

Keep mountain days separate from coastal plans
Tenerife has the stronger reason to consider a dedicated volcanic landscape day: Las Cañadas and the Teide area are a different environment from either coast. It should remain optional in winter. Check access, weather, any regulated route requirements and the return journey shortly before committing. A cable-car ticket and summit access are separate matters.
Gran Canaria also has highland terrain, but neither island needs a mountain day to justify the trip. If coast, town and a lower-stress week are the point, spend the time close to the base rather than turning seven nights into a route checklist.
Make the price comparison fair
Compare the same seven nights, same people and same meal setup. Add both airport transfers, the real walkability of the accommodation, any planned taxis and the activities you actually intend to take. A cheaper room far uphill or outside the useful town can lose its advantage through daily transport.
