Tenerife in Winter: North or South as Your Base?

For a first winter week with beaches as the priority, start your accommodation search in the south. Puerto de la Cruz is the stronger alternative when you would rather explore established neighbourhoods, look at plants and visit La Orotava. Decide on that focus first, then compare suitable places to stay. A cheap room on the other side of the island can create a daily transport problem.

What winter weather means for your base

The official tourism board describes the south as having more annual sunshine and the north as wetter and more humid. That is the basis for our recommendation to look south for a beach-focused stay. For context, AEMET records a January average daily maximum of 21.7°C at Tenerife South Airport, 64 metres above sea level, for the 1981–2010 period. This is neither sea temperature nor a forecast for Costa Adeje. Figures from the higher North Airport would not be a fair substitute for coastal Puerto de la Cruz either. AEMET climate normals.

Pack layers for shade, wind and evenings by the coast. If you want to swim every day, confirm the hotel’s pool heating and winter operation. A photograph of blue water does not answer either question.

Puerto de la Cruz: town life and greenery first

For a first visit, favour the central lower town. Plaza del Charco, La Ranilla and the old quarter give you a useful radius for walks and restaurant evenings. Give La Orotava its own half-day or full-day outing with time for lunch. The historic centre sits above the coast; choose a few streets and squares rather than adding more destinations before the return bus. La Orotava. A useful naming detail: the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava is in Puerto de la Cruz on Calle Retama. It is a different garden from the one behind La Orotava’s town hall. This version of the week does not need a sunny beach setting every day. It is still mostly outdoors: shorten or move garden and coastal walks during persistent rain. Rough seas are a reason to leave exposed seafront sections out of the day.

Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje: short walks to the sea

Los Cristianos is our first search area for an independently organised coastal week. Compare accommodation that makes food, a useful bus stop and the beach fit your everyday routine. Higher parts of town may involve an uphill return from the sea. Map proximity needs to be checked against the actual walking route.

Las Vistas offers a sandy beach and a broad promenade with places to eat nearby. That makes short outings with children, or a day without transport, easy to plan. Beach flags and current conditions still decide whether to enter the water. Official beach description.

Look at Costa Adeje first if the hotel should provide more of the week’s focus. Choose a specific setting near your preferred promenade, such as the coastal Fañabé area, then compare evening walks and the journey to the property. The wider area name says little about hills and distances. A seemingly cheaper room needing daily extra rides can lose its advantage over a better location.

For both areas, a couple of free coastal days are an intentional part of this trip. If that sounds less appealing than heading towards northern old towns each morning, Puerto de la Cruz will probably suit you better.

Check airport and bus connections before booking

Read the flight’s airport code: TFS is Tenerife South; TFN is Tenerife North. Compare flights and onward travel together, including luggage and the final walk from the bus stop.

• TFS to Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje: route 40 is the direct bus option along this corridor. A town stop is not a door-to-door hotel transfer. TITSA 40.
• TFN to Puerto de la Cruz: Aena lists route 30 for this connection. The actual departure needs to suit your flight. Aena’s North Airport bus information.
• TFS to Puerto or TFN to the south: route 343 connects Puerto, both airports and Costa Adeje. Its currently published timetable has only a few journeys each day, so plan around a particular departure. TITSA 343.

A late arrival or early departure may justify a confirmed transfer. Compare its total cost for your group with the saving on the flight or room. This guide does not carry today’s departure times forward as a winter 2026/27 timetable.

The plan works without a rental car because the base provides everyday activities. If you add several remote places, compare buses, a guided outing and, where useful, a rental car with parking for those particular days. Choosing north or south does not mean paying for a car throughout the stay.

Teide: separate scenery, cable car and summit

A landscape day in Las Cañadas, perhaps including the area around Roques de García, is the optional addition suggested here. Allow a full outing with confirmed transport in both directions. The map provides geographic orientation, rather than identifying an open walking route.

The cable car and summit are further decisions. A regular cable car ticket does not include permission for PNT 10 to the summit. The national park directs visitors to Tenerife ON for regulated trails; check reservations, fees and current access conditions there. Winter weather and road conditions can limit or prevent the excursion. Check the mountain forecast, road access and operation separately from conditions at the hotel. If they do not line up, stay at the coast. Neither version of the week then depends on a single summit appointment.

Compare the cost of seven nights fairly

Start with seven nights of accommodation, food for eight travel days, two airport journeys, local transport and the excursions you actually want. Winter does not automatically mean low prices; compare identical dates, room conditions and meal arrangements.

A hypothetical calculation for two adults, not a researched price forecast: 7 × €110 accommodation + 8 × €65 food for both + €100 for airport and local transport + €160 for excursions = €1,550 together, excluding flights. Replace all four assumptions with quotes for your dates. A longer private transfer or more expensive activity raises its line item; these figures are not guaranteed spending limits.

Two simple adjustments help with the location decision: an extra €30 per night adds €210 to the week. Two additional excursion transfers at an assumed €90 each add €180. A northern room is only cheaper once the whole plan has been compared. Keep booked and unbooked costs separate so a replacement activity does not accidentally sit alongside the original in your budget.
