Madeira in winter without a car: seven days from Funchal

A winter week on Madeira works without a rental car when Funchal remains your base. Walk around the city, take buses to selected towns and book at most one targeted hiking transfer. That leaves room for lunch stops and changes of plan, instead of trying to reach the whole island every day.

Here, seven days means six nights and five full days between arrival and departure. The plan suits couples, solo travellers and families interested in gardens, coastal towns and a short forest walk. A holiday built around a remote hike every morning needs a different transport budget.

Your Funchal base: old town or Lido?

For a first visit, I would look in the old town or lower central Funchal. Dinner, groceries and a rainy afternoon are easier to arrange without another journey. Check the actual street: the city climbs away from the sea. A room with a view may involve a substantial walk uphill; “central” tells you little about steps.

The Lido area to the west makes sense if hotel time and the promenade matter more. The old town then becomes a separate trip. Compare the nearest useful bus stop, evening return and excursion pick-up zone alongside the room. “Funchal pick-up” does not necessarily include every apartment door.

From the airport to your accommodation

The Aerobus connects the airport with Funchal and the western hotel area towards Praia Formosa. The currently linked timetable includes Mercado, Avenida do Mar and Lido. Choose your stop around the accommodation and the remaining walk with luggage. Airport departures are not the timetable for your return from a hotel. SIGA Aerobus information and timetable.

For winter travel, note that the published timetable specifies no Aerobus service on 25 December. An early flight or late arrival also needs a workable alternative. Compare a confirmed transfer or taxi for the whole party, asking about flight delays, meeting points and child seats where needed.

Seven days, six nights, one base

1. Arrive and get your bearings. Airport journey, check-in and a meal; no further appointment needed.
2. Old town and central Funchal. Walk between the market area and waterfront; add Madeira Story Centre if interested.
3. Monte Palace. Bus or cable car; one garden and time for the return journey.
4. Câmara de Lobos. Regional bus both ways; town, bay and lunch.
5. Ribeiro Frio and optional PR11. Suitable weather, trail status, reservation and confirmed return transport required.
6. Machico or a spare day. One coastal town by bus, or space for a postponed outing.
7. Fly home. A separately planned airport journey after six nights.

Give Monte its own outing, even if the garden visit takes less than a full day. Monte Palace lists bus and cable-car access and notes the steep grounds. Check transport and admission separately: a cable-car ticket is not garden entry. The garden also closes on 25 December. It is not an indoor substitute for sustained rain.

Day six remains one day. If you move the forest visit there, leave out Machico. Booking seven nights instead adds a full day, making this an eight-calendar-day trip.

Keep coastal days small and flexible

Câmara de Lobos works as a separate outing to its bay, with fishing boats, a walk around town and lunch. Choose a useful bus back before selecting the outward service. You then have no late connection to chase for an extra mountain stop. Official town information.

Apply the same approach to Machico: the town and bay are enough. A hike on the eastern peninsula is not an automatic extension of this relaxed day. A coastal visit needs neither swimming nor a long walk to justify the journey. Machico at Visit Madeira.

The Lido promenade provides a shorter alternative. Use open sections that suit the sea conditions and keep a straightforward return. A tourism overview does not establish continuous access along the entire coast. If the sea is rough, take your break in town. Funchal seaside promenade.

A scheduled bus is not a hiking shuttle

The SIGA network connects Funchal with towns including Câmara de Lobos and Machico. Services also support local journeys: weekend schedules, holidays and different routings can limit your outing window. A stop in a village is not necessarily beside your chosen trail. Use the SIGA timetables with your date, direction and precise stop. Some listings display previous and new route numbers together. Save the outward journey, return and an earlier way back. Avoid basing the day on an old blog timetable or the final bus alone.

A forest day with confirmed return transport

PR11 Vereda dos Balcões from Ribeiro Frio is the manageable walking option for this week. Visit Madeira gives three kilometres return and roughly one and a half hours walking. Arrange the return before travelling out. Your Taxi Madeira describes hiking transfers from Funchal; it is an example to enquire with, not a confirmed booking. When the weather changes your plan

Add six nights, food across seven travel days, two airport journeys, city and regional buses, admissions and the optional hiking transport. Compare transfers quoted per vehicle with group excursions priced per person using the total for your party.
