Orientation
Why Funchal works as the trip anchor
Funchal is not just the largest city on Madeira. It is the place where arrival, restaurants, supermarkets, old town walking, Monte access and car-free recovery days are easiest.
For most first trips, Funchal should be the base you deliberately use, not only the place you sleep before driving somewhere else.

I would not rent a car for the first Funchal day. Walk, eat, take the city in and save the rental for days when it actually improves the route.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Keeping the rental car for city days
Funchal is often easier on foot, by taxi or with local transport than with daily parking stress.
Treating Monte as a quick extra
Monte and gardens can take a meaningful half day if you want them to feel calm.
Booking too far out without checking transport
A cheaper stay outside the center may cost time if restaurants and pickups matter.

Funchal Madeira FAQ
How many days do you need in Funchal?+
One full day is enough for orientation. Two days are better if you want Monte, gardens, food and a slower arrival rhythm.
Is Funchal a good base for Madeira?+
Yes. It is the easiest base for first trips, especially if you mix car-free city days with rental car route days.
Do you need a car in Funchal?+
Not for city days. A car is useful for island routes but can be more friction than value inside central Funchal.
Is Funchal good with kids?+
Yes if you keep walking distances realistic, use snack breaks and avoid turning every city stop into a long queue or transfer.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Worth it as the easiest arrival base and the best place to balance road trip days with food, walking and a softer evening rhythm.
Skip if
Skip deep Funchal time only if you have a very short hiking-focused trip and already know you prefer rural bases.
With kids
Funchal works well with kids when you keep Monte, gardens, harbor walks, snacks and apartment logistics simple.

Guide Details
Funchal as arrival base
Funchal is the easiest place to land, reset and understand the island rhythm. Use it for the first night unless your flight time and rental car pickup make a rural transfer genuinely easier.
Old town, market and food
The old town works best as a walking area with restaurants, small streets and waterfront orientation. The market area is worth a look, but do not build a full day around it unless food and city detail are your priority.
Monte and gardens
Monte, cable car and gardens are useful when mountain weather is poor or when you want a non-driving day. They are not just filler; give them a half day if you want them to feel relaxed.
Parking notes
Central Funchal can make a rental car feel unnecessary. Pick up the car when the island route begins, or choose accommodation with clear parking if you keep it overnight.
