Orientation
Why the south is a smart first chapter
South Sardinia gives the route an easier start. Cagliari has airport logic, city evenings and access to both Villasimius and Chia without forcing a long first drive.
Villasimius is stronger for classic clear-water beach days. Chia and the south-west feel more open and slower, but they can add driving if the route then goes east.

I would start with the south if flying into Cagliari, then move east once the trip has found its rhythm.

Mini itinerary
Mini itinerary
- Day 1Start in Cagliari if flights or ferries make the south easy.
- Day 2Choose Villasimius for south-east beaches or Chia for a softer south-west rhythm.
- Day 3Keep one city evening in Cagliari before the road trip becomes beach-first.
Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Treating Cagliari only as an airport
A first or final evening in the city can make the route feel less rushed.
Combining Chia and Villasimius every day
They sit on different sides of the south and are better treated as separate beach choices.
Parking too late in August
The best beaches can feel much less calm once parking becomes the main activity.
Travel planning answers
South Sardinia beaches FAQ
Is Villasimius or Chia better?+
Choose Villasimius for classic south-east beach days. Choose Chia for dunes, a softer rhythm and south-west atmosphere.
Should you stay in Cagliari?+
Stay one or two nights if you want city evenings and easy arrival logistics before moving to a beach base.
Is the south worth it from Olbia?+
Only with enough time. For a short Olbia route, the north-east and east coast usually make more sense.

Practical take
The south is the easiest way to begin Sardinia if you arrive in Cagliari. Use it for a soft landing, beach choices and one city evening before the trip becomes more remote.
Villasimius or Chia
Choose Villasimius for clear-water beach density and easier south-east logic. Choose Chia for dunes, a more open coastal feel and a slower south-west mood.
Common mistakes
- Sleeping in Cagliari for every beach day: It can work, but a beach base saves repeated drives.
- Trying both sides daily: Villasimius and Chia are better as route choices, not constant cross-island hops.
- Arriving at famous beaches late: In summer, early timing changes the whole day.
