Orientation
Why this Sardinia itinerary matters
Sardinia is not a fast island. The best beaches often need parking timing, short walks, boat access or careful summer planning, so a route that looks easy can become tiring.
A strong first itinerary usually connects the south, the east coast cliffs and the north-east, then adds Alghero or Bosa only when the trip has enough nights.

I would rather sleep in three well-chosen coastal bases than spend the trip repacking for every famous beach.

Mini itinerary
Mini itinerary
- Day 1Choose Cagliari, Olbia or a ferry port before deciding the route order.
- Day 2Build around two or three coast bases, not a different beach every night.
- Day 3Add La Maddalena or Bosa only when the route has enough buffer.
Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Trying to circle the whole island in one week
Sardinia is large enough that a full loop can become driving-first instead of coast-first.
Booking flights before route direction
Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero create very different route logic.
Underestimating boat-day flexibility
Golfo di Orosei and La Maddalena are better with weather buffer than with one fixed rushed slot.
Travel planning answers
Sardinia Coast Road Trip Itinerary: 7, 10 and 14 Days FAQ
Is 7 days enough for Sardinia?+
Yes, for one side of the island. Choose north-east plus Alghero, or south plus Golfo di Orosei.
What is the best 10-day Sardinia route?+
Cagliari, Chia or Villasimius, Cala Gonone, Costa Smeralda or Palau, La Maddalena and Alghero is balanced.
Should you include Bosa?+
Include Bosa when you have enough time for the west coast to be a slow finish, not a long detour.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Worth it when you keep the route coastal, choose a clear arrival direction and leave enough room for boat weather.
Skip if
Skip a full-island loop if you only have five nights or hate beach parking logistics.
With kids
Use fewer bases, choose easier beaches near towns and avoid stacking long drives with remote cove walks.

Practical take
Sardinia rewards a route that respects the coast. Seven days should stay focused. Ten days can connect south, east and north-east. Fourteen days finally gives space for Alghero, Bosa or a slower Asinara-style add-on.
Suggested route logic
- 7 days north: Olbia, Costa Smeralda, Palau, La Maddalena and Alghero.
- 7 days south/east: Cagliari, Villasimius or Chia, Cala Gonone and Golfo di Orosei.
- 10 days classic: Cagliari, south coast, Cala Gonone, Costa Smeralda, La Maddalena and Alghero.
- 14 days slow: Cagliari, Chia, Golfo di Orosei, Palau or La Maddalena, Alghero and Bosa.
Common mistakes
- Too many one-night bases: Beach gear, parking and check-ins drain the day quickly.
- Ignoring airport geography: Cagliari and Olbia are not interchangeable once stays are booked.
- Treating La Maddalena as a quick stop: The archipelago works better with at least one full day and clear permit or tour planning.
