Orientation
Why Kaş is often the best route center
Kaş is smaller and slower than Fethiye, but it still has enough restaurants, boat access and road-trip logic to work as a real base.
Kalkan feels more polished, Kekova is best treated as a boat-day decision and Patara or nearby ruins add history without turning the coast into only beach time.

If I had to choose one Lycian coast base for a first trip, I would choose Kaş. It keeps the route flexible without feeling as activity-heavy as Fethiye.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Sleeping somewhere only because it looks closer on a map
Road curves, parking and evening atmosphere matter more than a small distance difference.
Treating Kekova as a quick roadside stop
It works best as a boat or water-focused day, not a rushed drive-by.
Adding too many ruins in summer heat
Ancient sites are better early, late or outside peak heat months.
Travel planning answers
Kaş, Kalkan and Kekova FAQ
Should you stay in Kaş or Kalkan?+
Choose Kaş for a relaxed town base and boat access. Choose Kalkan for a more polished villa and dining feel.
Is Kekova worth it?+
Yes, especially as a planned boat day when the weather and timing support it.
How long should you stay?+
Three nights are a strong first default. Four nights make boat days and nearby ruins easier.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Worth it as the most balanced Lycian coast base when you want boat days, small-town evenings, coves and ancient-site context.
Skip if
Skip it if you need sandy resort beaches, large hotels or the easiest airport-to-beach logistics.
With kids
Keep boat days short enough, choose swim stops carefully and avoid late winding-road transfers after the water.

Practical take
Kaş is the calm center of many good Turquoise Coast routes. It gives you water, town evenings, boat access and nearby history without making the trip feel like a resort stay.
How it fits the route
Use Kaş between Antalya and Fethiye. It is the point where the road trip usually starts to feel slower and more coastal, especially if you stay more than one night.
Typical trade-offs
Kaş is less convenient than Fethiye for airport logic and major activities, but it often feels better for a balanced route. Kalkan is prettier and more polished in places, but Kaş is usually easier as a base.
