Why South Rim?
The South Rim is open year-round and offers:

North Rim: More remote, only open May–October
Best Viewpoints
1. Mather Point
- First stop after entrance
- Spectacular sunrise
- Easily accessible, often crowded
2. Yavapai Point
- Geology Museum
- Wide canyon perspective
- Shade available
3. Hopi Point
- Best sunset spot
- 180° panorama
- Shuttle access only (March–Nov)
4. Desert View Watchtower
- Eastern end (25 miles from Village)
- Historic tower (Mary Colter design)
- Colorado River visible
Hikes
Rim Trail (easy, family-friendly)
- Length: 13 miles total (choose sections)
- Mostly paved or wide
- Flat along rim
- Perfect for kids/seniors
Bright Angel Trail (moderate to strenuous)
- 1.5 Mile House: 1.2 miles down/up (2–3h)
- 3 Mile House: 3 miles down/up (4–5h)
- DO NOT hike to river and back in one day! (17 miles, extremely dangerous)
South Kaibab Trail (strenuous)
- Steeper than Bright Angel
- Ooh Aah Point: 0.9 miles (1.5h)
- No water available!
Critical Safety Info

⚠️ Summer temps can hit 104°F+ below, 77°F above
⚠️ 2–3x more water than you think
⚠️ Descent easy, ascent exhausting – plan time

Shuttle System (free)
3 routes:
- Village Route (Blue): Hotels, Visitor Center, Market
- Kaibab/Rim Route (Orange): South Kaibab Trailhead, Yaki Point
- Hermits Rest Route (Red): Hopi Point, sunset spots (March–Nov only)
Parking very limited → use shuttle!
Lodging
In park (expensive, book early!):
- El Tovar (historic, luxury, 300+ USD/night)
- Bright Angel Lodge (cheaper, 150–250 USD)
- Mather Campground (camping, 18 USD/night)
Outside (cheaper):
- Tusayan (6 miles south, 100–180 USD/night)
- Williams (62 miles, 60–120 USD/night)
- Flagstaff (80 miles, more options)
Timing & Crowds
Less crowded:
- Winter (Nov–Feb, but cold!)
- Early morning (before 9 AM)
- Late afternoon (after 4 PM)
Crowded:
- Summer (June–August)
- Midday (10 AM–2 PM)
- Holidays/school breaks
Budget Tips
- America the Beautiful Pass (worth it here!)
- Bring your own food (restaurants expensive)
- Use shuttle instead of parking
- Sunrise/sunset free and more spectacular than tours
With Kids
Family-friendly:

Caution:
⚠️ No barriers at edge – watch kids constantly

❌ Hiking into canyon at midday (heat!)
