Why Page is the Perfect Base

Page, Arizona is the gateway to three spectacular highlights:

  1. Antelope Canyon (6 miles east)
  2. Horseshoe Bend (5 miles south)
  3. Lake Powell (right in town)

All doable in one day!

Antelope Canyon

Upper vs. Lower – Which is Better?

Upper Antelope Canyon ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pros: ✅ Famous light beams (March–October at midday) ✅ Ground level (no stairs/ladders) ✅ Wider, less claustrophobic

Cons: ⚠️ More expensive (80–100 USD/person) ⚠️ Very touristy (groups every 10 min) ⚠️ Tightly scheduled (little time to photograph)

Best time for light beams: 10:30 AM–1:30 PM (April–September)

Lower Antelope Canyon ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pros: ✅ Cheaper (60–80 USD/person) ✅ More time in canyon ✅ Less crowded ✅ Spectacular rock formations

Cons: ⚠️ Stairs/ladders (not accessible) ⚠️ Tighter, more winding ⚠️ No classic light beams

Best time: Morning (9–11 AM) for soft light

Booking (CRITICAL!)

Antelope Canyon ONLY accessible with tour!

  • Tours exclusively through Navajo guides
  • Slots book out weeks/months ahead
  • Book online: antelopecanyon.com or other providers
  • Walk-ins possible but unlikely

Tour options:

  • Standard tour: 60–100 USD (1–1.5h)
  • Photography tour: 150–200 USD (2–3h, tripod allowed, smaller groups)
  • Prime time (light beams): 100–130 USD

What You Need to Know

Flash flood danger:

  • Tours canceled during rain forecasts
  • No refunds for weather cancellations (insurance optional)
  • Monsoon season (July–August) = higher risk

Photography:

  • Phone/camera okay
  • Tripod only on photography tours
  • No drones
  • Backpacks often prohibited (locker at entrance)

Clothing:

  • Closed-toe shoes (sand!)
  • Light-colored clothing (better photos, reflects light)
  • Sunglasses (bright in canyon!)

Horseshoe Bend

THE iconic Colorado River bend

Facts:

  • 3 miles south of Page
  • Short hike: 1.5 miles round-trip (30–45 min)
  • Parking fee: 10 USD per vehicle
  • No permit/tour needed!

Best time:

  • Sunset (spectacular colors!)
  • Early morning (fewer tourists)
  • Midday (harshest light but dramatic)

Important:

  • No railing at edge (1,000ft drop!)
  • Hold kids' hands ALWAYS
  • Bring lots of water (exposed, hot!)
  • Partially paved but sandy

Photos:

  • Wide-angle lens ideal
  • Drones allowed (with NPS permit, complicated)
  • Sunset: shoot into the light

Page – The Town

Why stay here: ✅ Central location for all highlights ✅ Good hotel selection (70–150 USD/night) ✅ Supermarkets, restaurants, gas ✅ Lake Powell viewpoints

Best Season

Spring (March–May): ✅ Pleasant temps (60–82°F) ✅ Wildflowers ✅ Light beams from March

Summer (June–August): ✅ Best light beams (June/July) ✅ Lake Powell perfect for swimming ⚠️ Very hot (100–108°F!) ⚠️ Monsoon rain (flash flood risk) ⚠️ Very crowded

Fall (September–October): ✅ Ideal temperatures ✅ Light beams until October ✅ Fewer tourists from mid-September

Winter (November–February): ✅ Empty ⚠️ No light beams ⚠️ Cold (often below 41°F) ⚠️ Some tours reduced

Budget Tips

  • Lower Antelope cheaper than Upper
  • Horseshoe Bend only costs parking fee (10 USD)
  • Standard tour instead of photography tour (unless you're a pro)
  • Cook instead of restaurants (Safeway in Page)

With Kids

Horseshoe Bend: ✅ Kid-friendly (short hike) ⚠️ CAUTION cliff edge – hold hands!

Antelope Canyon: ✅ Lower okay for kids 6+ (stairs/ladders!) ✅ Upper better for younger kids (flat) ⚠️ Tours scheduled (kids must keep up) ⚠️ No running/playing in canyon
