Orientation
Why this transfer needs a plan
Toronto to Montréal can be a simple city-to-city transfer, a scenic Ontario route or the start of a broader Eastern Canada road trip.
The decision matters because a direct rail day and a multi-stop road day create completely different trips.

I would not drive Toronto to Montréal just to say I drove it. Drive if you want Kingston, Thousand Islands, Ottawa or flexible stops. Otherwise, the train is often the calmer choice.

Itinerary
Suggested itinerary
Direct city transfer
Best when Toronto and Montréal are the real priorities.
- 1Use train or a direct driving day.
- 2Do not pretend it is a sightseeing day.
- 3Arrive early enough for a relaxed Montréal evening.
Kingston and Thousand Islands route
Best for a slower Ontario road-trip feel.
- 1Leave Toronto with time for Kingston.
- 2Add Thousand Islands only if weather and season fit.
- 3Continue to Montréal the next day or after Ottawa.
Ottawa capital route
Best for the classic 10 day Eastern Canada itinerary.
- 1Toronto to Ottawa with a planned break.
- 2Sleep one or two nights in Ottawa.
- 3Continue to Montréal without overloading the transfer.
Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Calling a transfer day a sightseeing day
If you drive direct, accept that the day is mostly logistics.
Adding Kingston, Thousand Islands and Ottawa too tightly
These stops need time to feel like a route, not errands.
Arriving in Montréal too late
Late arrival wastes one of the route's best evening cities.

Toronto to Montréal FAQ
Should you drive or take the train from Toronto to Montréal?+
Take the train for simple city-to-city travel. Drive if Kingston, Thousand Islands, Ottawa or flexible stops are part of the trip.
Is Ottawa worth adding between Toronto and Montréal?+
Yes on a 10 day or longer route. Skip it if you can only give it a tired overnight.
Is Kingston worth a stop?+
Kingston is useful on slower road trips, especially with Thousand Islands. It is less necessary on rail-first city routes.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Worth it if you turn the transfer into a planned route with Kingston, Thousand Islands or Ottawa instead of a vague long drive.
Skip if
Take the train instead if you only need city-to-city transport and do not want scenic or small-town stops.
With kids
Break the route intentionally, avoid late arrivals in Montréal and keep snacks, parking and weather backups saved offline.

Direct transfer or real road trip?
Toronto to Montréal is where Eastern Canada planning becomes honest. If you only need to move between cities, the train is often calmer. If you want a road trip chapter, give the corridor a reason: Kingston, Thousand Islands, Ottawa or a slower Ontario day.
Do not drive simply because the word road trip sounds better. A car earns its place when it unlocks stops you actually want.
Best stop options
Kingston is the classic break: historic, practical and well placed. Thousand Islands adds scenery and a more holiday-like feeling, but it is seasonal and works best when the route has space.
Ottawa is the major decision. It turns the transfer into a capital chapter and works very well on a 10 day route. On a 7 day route, it may steal too much time from Montréal or Québec City.
Budget and logistics
Compare rail tickets against rental car days, fuel, parking and one-way fees before committing. The cheaper-looking option can change once central parking and unused car days enter the trip.
WanderSpend is helpful for this corridor because costs split across categories: train tickets, rental car, fuel, parking, hotel nights, groceries, snacks and shared meals.
Where to go next
Use the Ottawa guide if you are adding a capital stop, then continue with the Montréal travel guide. For transport logic, compare Eastern Canada train vs car.
