Orientation
Why the Triangle Islands are different
Pico, Faial and São Jorge are close enough to compare, but they do not feel the same. Pico is vertical and volcanic, Faial is practical and maritime, São Jorge is long, green and hiking-focused.
This is the best Azores chapter when the trip can handle ferries and wants more than São Miguel's classic first-island route.

I would pick two of the three for a first central-islands route. Pico plus Faial is simpler; São Jorge adds depth but needs more space.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Trying all three too fast
Ferry timing, car pickup and weather can make a quick triangle feel rushed.
Assuming Pico is only the mountain
Vineyards, coast roads and views of neighboring islands matter too.
Adding São Jorge without time for fajãs
São Jorge needs slow driving and walking time to make sense.

Pico, Faial and São Jorge FAQ
Which Triangle Island is best?+
Pico for volcano and vineyards, Faial for Horta and easier logistics, São Jorge for fajãs and hiking.
Can you visit all three?+
Yes, but four to seven days are better than a rushed two-night ferry chain.
Where should you base?+
Faial or Pico are easiest for most first central-islands routes. São Jorge is better with more time.

Skip if
Skip the Triangle Islands if you want the simplest first Azores trip; São Miguel plus Terceira is easier.
With kids

Practical take
The Triangle Islands are the Azores at their most layered. Pico brings the mountain and vineyards, Faial brings Horta and maritime rhythm, and São Jorge brings fajãs and hiking.
Pico, Faial or São Jorge
Choose Pico if the volcano and vineyard landscape are the priority. Choose Faial if you want an easier base and Horta evenings. Choose São Jorge if hiking and quiet roads matter more than simple logistics.
Common mistakes
- Trying to complete the triangle too fast: The ferries are helpful, but not magic.
- Only chasing Pico summit plans: Weather can block the mountain, so keep other Pico days worthwhile.
- Underestimating São Jorge: It is narrow and dramatic, but it asks for slow driving.
