Orientation
Why the itinerary needs honest pacing
The Great Ocean Road in Australia is short enough to tempt a day trip but long enough to punish a rushed plan. The drive becomes much better when you protect the coast's natural rhythm.
A one-day itinerary is about accepting trade-offs. A two-day itinerary is the classic first version. A three-day itinerary lets the Twelve Apostles area, Apollo Bay and the Otways feel like places rather than checkpoints.

If you can add one overnight, do it. The Great Ocean Road is not only about seeing the Twelve Apostles; it is about not reaching them tired, rushed and half-aware of the coast you just drove through.

Itinerary
Suggested itinerary
1 day from Melbourne, express route
Useful only if you accept a long day and a selective stop list.
- 1Leave Melbourne early and keep Torquay or Bells Beach short.
- 2Choose either Lorne/Apollo Bay atmosphere or a direct push west; do not overfill both.
- 3Prioritize the Twelve Apostles and one nearby stop such as Gibson Steps or Loch Ard Gorge.
- 4Expect a late return and avoid driving tired.
2 days, classic first route
The best default for most first-time visitors.
- 1Day 1: Melbourne, Torquay, Bells Beach, Aireys Inlet, Lorne and Apollo Bay overnight.
- 2Day 2: Apollo Bay to Twelve Apostles, Gibson Steps, Loch Ard Gorge, Port Campbell and return or continue west.
- 3Keep sunset or sunrise expectations realistic; you may need Port Campbell for the best light.
3 days, calmer route
Better for photography, families and travelers who dislike rushed driving.
- 1Day 1: Melbourne to Lorne or Apollo Bay with slow surf-coast stops.
- 2Day 2: Apollo Bay, Otways or Cape Otway, Twelve Apostles and Port Campbell.
- 3Day 3: Port Campbell sunrise or nearby cliffs, then Warrnambool/Port Fairy or a quieter return.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Treating one day like three days
A Melbourne day trip should be selective. If every town becomes mandatory, the drive becomes the trip.
Arriving at the Twelve Apostles tired
The famous viewpoint is better with time, weather awareness and enough energy for nearby stops.
Booking the wrong overnight town
Apollo Bay balances the route; Port Campbell serves the Twelve Apostles. Choose based on the trip goal.
Not saving route notes offline
Reception gaps and tired arrivals are easier when addresses, booking references and costs are already saved.

What is the best Great Ocean Road itinerary for first-time visitors?+
Two days with an Apollo Bay or Port Campbell overnight is the best default for most first-time visitors.
Is three days too much?+

Where should I stay overnight?+
Choose Apollo Bay for balance, Port Campbell for Twelve Apostles light and Lorne for a slower coastal-town start.

Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
Worth it when you give the route at least two days; one day can work only as a selective express route from Melbourne.
Skip if
Skip the full route if you cannot leave early, dislike long driving days or need to be back in Melbourne at a comfortable evening hour.
With kids
Use two nights or at least one balanced overnight, keep beach breaks simple and avoid pairing the Twelve Apostles with a late-night return.

Guide Details
1-day version from Melbourne
A one-day Great Ocean Road Australia itinerary is a compromise. It makes sense if you have one free day, a confident driver and no desire to book an overnight stay. It does not make sense if you want a slow coastal road trip.
Leave early, keep Torquay or Bells Beach short and avoid stacking every viewpoint before Lorne. The road from Lorne toward Apollo Bay is scenic but winding, so travel time is part of the experience. By the time you reach the Twelve Apostles area, you should still have energy for the main viewpoint and one nearby stop.
2-day classic route
The classic two-day route is cleaner. Day one takes you from Melbourne through Torquay, Bells Beach, Aireys Inlet, Lorne, Kennett River and Apollo Bay. Day two moves west to the Twelve Apostles, Gibson Steps, Loch Ard Gorge, Port Campbell and the return or continuation.
This version gives the first coastal section room to feel like travel rather than transit. It also makes food, fuel and check-in decisions less reactive.
3-day slower route
Three days is not excessive. It lets you protect sunrise or sunset near Port Campbell, add Cape Otway or an Otways pause, and avoid returning to Melbourne after the most visually intense part of the route.
For families, three days also changes the mood: beach breaks, groceries, short walks and early nights become easier to fit.
Twelve Apostles timing
Sunrise and sunset are usually the most rewarding times around the Twelve Apostles area, but weather matters more than fantasy light. Wind, rain, cloud and spray can all change the experience quickly. Port Campbell is the most useful base if light is the priority.
What to skip if short on time
With one day, skip long inland detours and repeated stops that offer a similar beach or headland feeling. Choose fewer stronger pauses: one surf coast stop, one coastal town pause, Twelve Apostles and one nearby cliff stop.
Saving the route
Before leaving Melbourne, save route order, overnight choices, booking references, grocery notes, fuel decisions and shared costs. WanderSpend is useful here because your places, travel days, notes and budget stay in one private trip space instead of being split across maps, chats and screenshots.
