Orientation

Why the Glacier Express is a route choice, not just an attraction

The Glacier Express is famous because the journey matters. It is not the fastest way across Switzerland, and that is the point. The train works best when the day is allowed to be slow.

Andermatt gives the route a useful middle point and a different alpine mood from Zermatt or Jungfrau. It can break a long transfer, but it should not be squeezed into an already full itinerary.

Alex's Take

I would add the Glacier Express only when the rail experience is part of the trip's purpose. If the goal is hiking, viewpoints and village time, spend the day in Jungfrau or Zermatt instead.

Mini itinerary

Mini itinerary

  1. Day 1Use Andermatt as a compact overnight or rail-break base.
  2. Day 2Choose Glacier Express only when the route has time for a full scenic rail day.
  3. Day 3Continue toward Zermatt, Chur or St. Moritz depending on the wider plan.

Planning notes

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Treating the Glacier Express as a shortcut

It is a scenic experience with timing and reservation logic, not simply the quickest transfer.

Adding it after too many mountain bases

A long rail day can feel tiring if the route already has too many hotel changes.

Forgetting seat reservations and pass details

Panorama trains can involve supplements, reservations and specific ticket rules.

Travel planning answers

Glacier Express and Andermatt FAQ

Is the Glacier Express essential?+

No. It is excellent for rail-focused trips, but not essential for a short first Swiss Alps itinerary.

Where should you stay for the Glacier Express?+

Zermatt, Andermatt, Chur and St. Moritz are common planning points, depending on how much of the route you ride.

Is Andermatt worth a stop?+

Yes if it breaks the route or you want a quieter central Alps base. It is less necessary if time is tight.

Worth it / Skip if

Worth it

Worth it for travelers who value the rail journey itself and want a slower east-west alpine connection.

Skip if

Skip it on a short hiking-focused trip; the Jungfrau Region or Zermatt usually deliver more active time per day.

With kids

Keep the rail day realistic, pack snacks and activities, and avoid making the train the only memorable moment of the route.

Practical take

The Glacier Express is strongest when the journey is the activity. It belongs in a rail-first Switzerland trip more than in a short hiking-first itinerary.

How to fit it

Use it between Zermatt, Andermatt, Chur or St. Moritz when the route has space for a full scenic day. If you only have five to seven days, choose one strong mountain region before adding a panorama train.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing it into a short trip: The route can become all transfer and little mountain time.
  • Ignoring reservations: Scenic trains need more planning than normal regional hops.
  • Skipping recovery time: A long sitting day can still feel like a full travel day.
