Orientation
Why the Keys need time
The Overseas Highway is the Florida road-trip image many people carry in their head. The mistake is treating it as a single road to Key West.
The Keys work better as a chain of moods: reef and mangrove access in Key Largo, food and water stops around Islamorada, bridge views near Marathon and a slower finish in Key West.
With one night it is good. With two or three nights, the drive finally stops feeling like a transfer.

I would not do Key West as a punishing day trip from Miami. Sleep somewhere in the Keys and let the drive become the point.

Planning notes
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Doing Key West as a long day trip
It turns the strongest Florida drive into a fatigue project.
Skipping the middle Keys
The route feels rushed if Key Largo, Islamorada and Marathon are only windshield scenery.
Forgetting weather backups
Reef, boat and kayak plans depend on conditions. Keep one land-based day shape ready.

Florida Keys FAQ
How many days do you need for the Florida Keys?+
Two nights are the best minimum. Three nights feel much calmer if you want Key West and water activities.
Is Key West worth the drive?+
Yes if you can sleep there or nearby. As a same-day return from Miami, it is usually too rushed.
Where should you stay in the Keys?+
Key Largo or Islamorada for easier access, Marathon for midpoint logic, Key West for the strongest southern finish.
Do you need a car in the Keys?+
Yes for the route. In Key West itself, park once and walk or bike.
Worth it / Skip if
Worth it
The Keys are Florida’s most memorable drive when you give the islands more than a rushed day trip from Miami.
Skip if
Skip Key West as a same-day return from Miami unless the goal is mostly driving.
With kids
Break the drive with Key Largo, Islamorada or Marathon stops; do not make every hour a car hour.

Guide Details
A slower Overseas Highway guide for Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Seven Mile Bridge and Key West.
Use this guide as a calm route-building block: clear priorities, realistic driving and enough flexibility for weather, season and energy.
Key Largo and Reef Start

Key Largo is the easiest way to begin the Keys without overcommitting to Key West immediately. It is close enough to Miami but already feels like a different rhythm.
Use it for reef, kayak or state-park planning if conditions fit. Water activities depend on weather, so keep a land-based backup.
Islamorada and Marathon Pause

Islamorada and Marathon are not just places to pass through. They are where the drive becomes more comfortable, especially if you are traveling with kids or avoiding a late Key West arrival.
Pick one lunch or water stop and one short walk. That is enough structure for the middle Keys.
Seven Mile Bridge Timing

Seven Mile Bridge is the clearest visual symbol of the Keys. It is also a place where timing matters because traffic, light and fatigue can change the feeling quickly.
Do not treat the bridge as the end of the plan. It should sit inside a slower day that already has a realistic overnight.
Key West and Sunset Logic

Key West is best when you can park once and walk. The old-town streets, water edges and sunset ritual work much better without a same-day return hanging over you.
If you cannot sleep in Key West, consider a shorter southern Keys plan instead of chasing the farthest point.
Planning Logic
Plan the Keys around overnight placement. The distance is not huge on paper, but slow traffic, bridges and stops make the day longer.
Book winter and holiday lodging early. The Keys have limited inventory and pricing can jump sharply.
What I Would Prioritize
I would prioritize one water or nature stop, one middle Keys meal or marina pause, Seven Mile Bridge and a walkable Key West block. I would skip the forced end-to-end sprint.
Where to Go Next
Return to Miami, continue toward the Everglades via Homestead, or cross west toward Naples if the route is becoming a full Florida loop.
